Ford plans Model E electric range to rival Tesla

Fords new electric line-up will launch in 2019 and will include a compact SUV and a Focus-sized car.

The cars will be offered as EV, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid variants and will have a 200-mile range, Autocar reports.

Tesla’s attempts to trademark the Model E name in 2013 were blocked by Ford, leaving the name free to use.

A spokesperson for Ford said the Model E range would be realistically priced, but would need to cover its costs. It will be aimed at markets with the biggest interest in electric vehicles.

Ford outlined its plans to invest $4.5 billion (around £3.4 billion) in electric cars last year; it will release 13 new electrified vehicles by 2020.

Ford's current electric offering is an electric version of its Focus, which is said to be replaced later this year, increasing its range from 76 miles to 100 miles.
