EPA calls on VW to make EVs in the US

News

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has asked Volkswagen (VW) to produce electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States, as a way to make up for the dieselgate scandal, the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag has reported.

The news comes as the EPA continues its negotiations with VW to agree on a fix for nearly 600,000 diesel vehicles which emit up to 40 times the legal pollution limits. According to the newspaper, the EPA has asked VW to start producing EVs at its plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to help build a network of charging stations in the US.

While some of VW’s cars already feature electric or hybrid motors, it is unclear whether they will be expected to produce new models or reproduce more existing ones.

The Group is still yet to release its strategy for fixing the technical software present in almost 600,000 diesel cars and is facing a growing number of legal claims.
