Morgan awarded £6m to develop EV powertrains in the UK

Morgan Motor Company has been awarded £6 million worth of funding to lead a project to develop new powertrain technologies in the UK.

The funding has been awarded by the UK’s Advanced Propulsion Centre and Morgan will team up with UK companies Delta Motorsport and Potenza Technology to develop new hybrid and electric powertrain systems, with the aim of delivering ‘best-in-class fuel economy’.

The technologies developed as a part of this project are planned to be included in Morgan’s range of hand-built sports cars starting in 2019, with plans in place for all of its models to have hybrid options by the end of the decade.

Morgan expects improvements in performance, fuel economy and refinement to increase demand in markets across the UK and Europe, resulting in the growth of its workforce at its Malvern factory.

Steve Morris, Morgan managing director, said: “This is a very exciting project for us. We have been involved in the research and development of new propulsion technology since the inception of the LifeCar project almost ten years ago. We are now ready to develop the best hybrid and electric drive-train solutions for production implementation before the end of the decade. We expect the project to deliver growth and employment benefits here at Morgan and in our partner companies, but equally it will broaden the appeal of the Morgan brand and attract new customers in our key markets.”
