Prince Harry and Meghan Markle choose electric wedding car

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle chose to drive a zero-emission Jaguar E-Type Concept Zero to take them from Windsor Castle to their evening reception at Frogmore House on 19 May.

The Concept Zero is a modern take on the 1960’s British classic, the Jaguar E-type, but modified with an electric powertrain.

Engineered by Jaguar Classic at Classic Works in Warwickshire, E-type Concept Zero is based on a 1968 Series 1.5 Jaguar E-type.

The electric powertrain has been specially designed for the E-type Concept Zero. Its 40kWh battery can achieve real world range of around 170 miles on a single charge. It can sprint to 0-60mph in just 5.5 seconds

Its lithium-ion battery pack has the same dimensions and similar weight to the six-cylinder engine used in the original E-type and sits in the same location as the XK engine.

The electric motor lies just behind the battery pack, in the same location as the E-type’s gearbox. A new propshaft sends power to a carry-over differential and final drive. Total weight is 80kg lower than the original E-type’s.

Using an electric powertrain with similar weight and dimensions to the outgoing petrol model means the car’s structure has not changed; it drives, handles, rides and brakes like an original E-type. Front-rear weight distribution is unchanged.
