Hackney Council has installed London’s first publicly accessible on-street rapid charging points for electric vehicles.

The three units are located in Bentley Road in Dalston; Calvert Avenue in Shoreditch; and Reading Lane in Hackney Central. The 50 kW chargers come with both AC and DC cables and are capable of fully charging a vehicle in half an hour. They feature an eight inch LCD screen for simple user interaction, as well as real time consumption data and a constantly refreshed charging cost, which is measured on a pay as you go basis.

75 per cent of the funding was provided by Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV), with the remaining 25 per cent provided by Transport for London (TfL). Initial registration fee with be £20, with an annual fee of the same amount.

Cllr Feryal Demirci, Hackney Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Sustainability, announced the formal launch of the on-street charging network: “The Council is committed to improving air quality in the borough, including supporting the development of electric vehicles both locally and across London.

“We hope this network will make charging more accessible, efficient and practical, in particular enabling electric taxis and private hire vehicles, as well as other commercial vehicles such as those used by courier companies, to recharge during the working day.”

Principal Transport Planner at Hackney Council, Ben Kennedy, said: “Hackney has a reputation as one of London’s most innovative boroughs, and this is reflected in encouraging the transition to an e-mobility society for residents, visitors and commercial vehicles”.

“Making these on-street rapid EV charging points available for public use is an important development, and we have been delighted to work with the engineers at APT Technologies to make this a reality.”
