US manufacturer BYD is reported to have sold the most plug-in hybrids or battery electric cars in 2015, with the majority of vehicles delivered to China.

BYD is reported to have sold 61,722 last year, followed by Tesla, who scored second highest with over 50,557 EV sales.

BYD is most recognised for its work with electric buses, which operate in California, and its electric E6 hatchback SUVs which are being used as taxis in various cities.

The two most popular models from BYD are the Qin plug-in compact sedan and the Tang plug-in compact SUV. Furthermore, the company delivered the largest number of electric buses ever at the beginning of 2016 to the city of Shenzhen.

The delivery is part of China’s wider initiative to ensure 90 per cent of all its new vehicles are electric by 2020.
