Hounslow trials new EV charge points

News

Hounslow Council’s hybrid fleet are set to trial a new type of electric vehicle (EV) charge point that can be fitted into existing lamp posts.

The charge points, developed as a solution for residents who do not have access to off street parking and cost approximately £70 per charge point, which is a significant saving compared to the £6,000 installation cost for a traditional public charger.

The Council is the first in the UK to trial the new technology, developed by German company Ubitricity, and if the pilot is successful it will look to place the new chargers across the borough to promote the use of EVs and help improve air quality.

Councillor Amrit Mann, Hounslow Council Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “Although the cost of electric vehicles is still stubbornly more expensive than petrol or diesel, the price is coming down and the cost to the environment of combustion engines is immense.

“The appetite for electric cars is there and the more people that have them the cheaper they will become.

“It is therefore very exciting to be involved in this pilot project.”
