Suzuki reports improper fuel efficiency tests on 16 models

Suzuki has reported that it used improper fuel-efficiency testing methods on 16 models that were not compliant with Japanese regulations.

The admission affects around 2.1 million vehicles that were sold in Japan, but the manufacturer has stressed that it does not affect cars sold overseas.

The issue stems from Suzuki using a wind tunnel to test the efficiency of its vehicles, which it claims was out of concern about wind conditions at its Sagara proving grounds.

The manufacturer has said that there is no need to revise the ratings, as further testing has shown that the earlier results were within an acceptable range of deviation. However, Suzuki has seen its shares plunge following the news.
