Porsche aiming for 800 volt rapid charging breakthrough

News

Porsche is developing plans for new 800 volt rapid charging technology to greatly decrease charging times.

Alongside its work on the forthcoming all-electric Mission E, Porsche also hopes to lead a breakthrough in electric vehicle (EV) charging technology.

Porsche believes that for EVs to fully take off, a suitably designed rapid-charging infrastructure must be ‘tailored to customary user behaviour during long trips’ and offer a ‘convenient ratio of driving time to break periods’.

It is that idea that is driving the development of its new 800 volt charging technology, which it claims should make it possible to get roughly 400km of charge in 15-20 minutes.

Technical barriers still stand in the way of achieving this target, such as the requirement for new cooling systems, but Porsche believes that a shift to higher voltage is ‘inevitable’ in the quest to reduce charging times.
