Mercedes E-Class first to run on efficient engine

News

The Mercedes Benz E-Class, due to be released this Spring, is set to be the first of the group’s models to run on the latest efficient diesel engine, designed by the company.

The cleaner engine features a four-cylinder turbocharged diesel unit, also named OM 654, and is predicted to play a significant role in Mercedes’ wider plan to downsize the number of engine options in order to reduce emissions.

The unit includes fourth generation common-rail diesel technology, coated cylinders to reduce friction and boasts a tailored exhaust treatment system which combines to offer better emissions and economy figures.

Headline figures suggest a 13 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption and, despite a smaller and lighter engine, the output has increased to 192bhp, compared to the previous version’s output of 168bhp.

The development of a more fuel efficient engine comes amid Europe’s move to implement more accurate emissions tests, reflective of real driving conditions. Mercedes has installed its emissions reduction technology directly onto the engine, which also offers improved insulation.

Each of the systems, multiway exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), AdBlue treatment, and particulate filter (sDPF), operate to improve fuel consumption and are particularly effective on shorter journeys.
