The Volkswagen Group has announced that it will launch 20 more electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids by 2020 across all ranges, from compact cars to the next Phaeton and the Audi A8.

Chairman Martin Winkerton made the announcement at the 66th annual Frankfurt Motor Show, as the Volkswagen group unveiled a number of new plug in concepts, including the Porsche Mission E and the Audi e-tron quattro, which he described as “nothing less than a quantum leap for our industry”.

Winkerton also made a commitment to increased plans for connected cars, saying that the Volkswagen Group already has the broadest connected fleet on the market and reaffirmed that the company would remain at the forefront of digitisation, with all cars transformed into 'smartphones on wheels' by 2020.

Volkswagen also premiered its new Tiguan family sized SUV at the Show, with a GTE plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) model.

Four versions of the Tiguan were on display, the R-line, the classic on-road model, an off-road model and the GTE. The GTE was unveiled as a concept car, with plug-in hybrid drive and 160 kW of system power.

It was designed to offer an outlook on the future development of the SUV and the capability for PHEV SUVs. Although no set plans for mass production have been announced, with Volkswagen already producing the Golf GTE hybrid and set to release the Passat GTE hybrid, the Tiguan concept gives an idea of future electric offerings from the company.
