European EV bus manufacturers agree on an open interface for charging

News

European bus manufacturers Irizar, Solaris, VDL and Volvo have agreed to ensure the interoperability of electric buses by using charging infrastructure provided by ABB, Heliox and Siemens.

The firms are working together to ensure an open interface is available between electric buses and charging infrastructure to facilitate the introduction of EV bus systems in European cities.

The news comes as the public transport community continues to prepare for the introduction of EV buses across Europe and standardisation activities via the European body. The European standards are expected to come into place from 2019 and international standards in 2020.

The European bus manufacturers and charging system suppliers have agreed to work together in an open, transparent and voluntary manner to meet the needs of cities which have already implemented EV buses.

Common preferred interfaces will be opened up for all market participants and will be used for EV buses to charge over night and during stops.
