Lexus to release hydrogen fuel cell car by 2020

Lexus is planning to release a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle by 2020, according to a report from Auto Express.

Alain Uyttenhoven, head of Lexus Europe, told Auto Express that Lexus is currently adapting the hydrogen fuel cell technology developed by its sister company Toyota, with only a few hurdles left to overcome.

If the plans come to fruition, the new Lexus fuel cell will follow in the footsteps of the Toyota Mirai, the world’s first commercially available fuel cell car which was released in 2015.

Uyttenhoven said the problem Lexus is currently working to overcome is ‘packaging the technology into a normal sized car’. He explained that, as it stands, it will fit into an SUV, but Lexus is looking to get ‘the right level of performance for a premium car’.
