Opel announces Ampera-e electric vehicle launch

News

German manufacturer Opel has announced that it will launch its new battery electric car next year, marking the beginning of a significant change for the company’s direction.

With 29 new models scheduled for between 2016 and 2020., the new five-door, five seat will be called ‘Ampera-e’. Boasting a longer range on a full charge than most electric cars, Opel has suggested that the model will still be modestly priced, predicted around the £20,000 mark.

The Ampera-e will feature parent organisation General Motor’s (GM) On-Star technology system , which integrates entertainment and navigation technologies, while also offering connected car services and a WiFi hotspot for passengers.

Details are unconfirmed, but the technical specifications will be very similar to those of the Chevrolet Bolt in the USA. The new Ampera-e has been confirmed for production in Europe, making it easier for drivers to import one into the UK should they wish - unlike the Bolt. It is also, however, unconfirmed whether a full right-hand drive model will be made, although it seems more than likely.

Mary Barra, General Motors Chairman, said: “GM and Opel have always been convinced that electric cars will play a defining role in future mobility. The game-changing technology of the Ampera-e is a significant step toward realising that vision. Our new battery electric car is also another boost for Opel’s reputation for making innovative engineering widely accessible.”

Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann, Opel CEO, said: “Electric vehicles have the potential to make a significant contribution to climate protection and emissions reduction. The new Ampera-e will open the road to electric mobility by breaking down the barriers of high price and short driving range.”

The Ampera-e expected to go on show at the Geneva Motor Show.
