Self-repairing roads that charge EVs could be underway

Dutch researchers are planning to test self-repairing asphalt which could be used to fix potholes and charge electric vehicles.

According to Engadget, Delft University's Erik Schlangen told The Verge that there are plans to test self-repairing asphalt which has conductive steel fibres and bacteria which could fix small cracks in the pavement and send electricity to EVs above.

Fixing the road involves an induction machine that generates enough heat in both the asphalt and the fibres to trigger the repair process.

Also, electricity will need to be sent through the steel of vehicles and cars will need wireless charging systems.

Schlangen estimates that this road would cost about 25 percent more than usual.

It's not certain when tests would start, although there have been Dutch experiments with self-fixing asphalt dating back to 2010.
