AFV registrations in Europe see 21.1 per cent growth

Registrations of new alternative fuel vehicles (AFV) were up by 21.1 per cent in Europe for the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2015 compared to the same time frame the previous year.

In total 164,718 units were registered, of which hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) made up 60,911, represented a year-on-year increase of 28.8 per cent. Pure electric vehicle (EV) registrations saw the most growth, with registrations increasing by 160.5 per cent for a total of 58,689 units.

The Netherlands saw the largest increase in AFV registrations, up 258.1 per cent, followed by France which saw an increase of 43.7 per cent and Germany with 27.8 per cent. The UK saw an increase of 17.4 per cent compared to Q4 2014.

Over the whole year, AFV registrations were up by an average of 20 per cent, representing 4.2 per cent of total passenger car registrations in Europe.

Despite the large increases in EV and HEV registrations, other  alternative fuel vehicles, including propane and natural gas, saw a 31.8 per cent decrease in registrations.
