Safety project aims to give electric vehicles sound

A gaming company is working with sound designers in a bid to give silent electric vehicles noise and make them safer.

Programming house Ustwo, which has a history in the gaming and app world, has started working with sound designers to create sounds that can be emitted by EVs to improve safety.

The project follows statutory requirements in Europe and US which state that new electric vehicles will have to make a noise from 2019.

Ustwo has partnered with audio branding consultancy Man Made Music and together they are using virtual reality (VR) to explore effective sounds that electric vehicles could make.

Ustwo product designer Anders Oscarsson, says: “VR technology enables us to create simulations of the future. Before VR, these future visions could only be explored in the form of conceptual sketches or costly physical prototypes, but now we can actually experience them by using virtual technology.”
