Biden sets target for half of new US vehicles to be electric by 2030

US President Joe Biden is setting a goal for half of all new US vehicle sales to be electric by 2030 while also tightening pollution standards for cars and trucks.

The White House outlined its plan to tackle the climate crisis by cutting emissions from vehicles, with Biden set to sign an executive order demanding that 50 per cent of all new cars and trucks sold by the end of the decade be powered by electric batteries. Speaking to car makers and unions, he said that ‘the question is whether we will lead or fall behind in the race for the future’.

From 2023, new cars will also be required to emit 10 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions compared to the previous year, with further reductions of five per cent a year mandated until 2026. This is under new fuel efficiency standards from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and US Department of Transport.
