Drivers to switch off engine in traffic to minimise pollution

In a bid to improve air quality in Lincolnshire, motorists are being advised to turn off their engines when sitting in traffic.

Leaflets are being distributed by South Kesteven District Council in order to raise awareness of high pollution levels.

The campaign mainly looks at traffic problems in Brook Street and Wharf Road in Grantham.

According to Lincolnshire Live, the business manager for environmental health at the district council said they wanted to get the message out “about what individuals can do to improve the air quality”.

She continued: "We are encouraging motorists if they are stuck in traffic for more than a minute to switch off their engine.

“Many of the new cars have the stop-start technology but there are a lot of cars that don't and we would like to raise awareness and encourage people that they can just do this themselves."

She added that turning off engines makes a massive difference and it will help people save money as they won't be burning fuel.
