Driverless shuttle tests to launch in London

Around 100 people are being given the opportunity to test an autonomous vehicle for the first time.

The prototype shuttle, which is being developed by Oxbotica, will have five cameras and three lasers to help the vehicle navigate at a speed of up to 10mph.

It will set off on a two-mile route near the O2 Arena in the capital over the next three weeks, giving members of the public the opportunity to have a ride.

This is part of an £8 million GATEway Project which aims to make it easier for smaller neighbourhoods in Greenwich to access existing public transport hubs.

Officials behind it believe the first paying passengers could use the system by 2019 on a trial basis, and eventually be rolled out to other locations.

Dr Graeme Smith, chief executive of Oxbotica, said: "This needs to be like any other form of transportation. It shouldn't be a white-knuckle ride for passengers. We know we've got the software right when the journeys are unremarkable.
