19.9 per cent uplift in new car market for alternatively fuelled cars

Registrations of alternatively fuelled vehicles rose by 19.9 per cent in February, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

New car registrations grew 8.4 per cent compared to the same month last year, with alternatively fuelled vehicles experiencing the largest uptake. Compared to February 2015 which saw 1,852 registrations of alternatively fuelled vehicles, February 2016 witnessed 2,221 registrations, spread across private sector, fleet and business.

Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: “February is typically one of the quietest months of the year, ahead of March’s plate change, but this positive performance is encouraging and puts the sector in a good position for the coming 12 months.”
