Number of EV charging stations to overtake petrol stations by 2020

The number of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations is expected to overtake the number of petrol stations in the UK by the summer of 2020, according to analysis by Nissan.

The number of EV charging stations has increased from just a few hundred in 2011 to around 4,100 in 2016, and Nissan estimates this will reach 7,900 by 2020.

In comparison, more then 75 per cent in UK petrol stations have closed over the last 40 years, with numbers dropping from 37,539 in 1970 to 8,472 as of the end of 2015.

Assuming a steady rate of decline, Nissan predicts that by August 2020 the number of petrol stations will fall under 7,870 - less than the estimated number of EV charging points.

Edward Jones, EV manager, Nissan Motor, said; “As electric vehicle sales take off, the charging infrastructure is keeping pace and paving the way for convenient all-electric driving. Combine that with constant improvements in our battery performance and we believe the tipping point for mass EV uptake is upon us.

“As with similar breakthrough technologies, the adoption of electric vehicles should follow an ‘S-curve’ of demand. A gradual uptake from early adopters accelerates to a groundswell of consumers buying electric vehicles just as they would any other powertrain.”
