Nissan begins on road autonomous driving trials

Nissan has begun on road trials for its ‘Nissan Intelligent Driving’ autonomous driving technology.

With the new technology, Nissan hopes to reach its ‘Zero Fatality’ corporate goal, which aims to eliminate virtually all fatalities from road traffic accidents by taking away the risks of driver error.

The new technology is set to be rolled out in a number of stages. Stage one will be offered in Japan by the end of 2016 and will allow for autonomous driving under heavy highway traffic conditions.

Nissan hopes to implement the second stage by 2018, which will give the capability for lane changes on highways. By 2020, Nissan hopes to introduce new technology that allows vehicles to manage city and urban roads, including intersections.

The prototype now entering testing is based on the Leaf and will operate on both highway and urban roads to develop and enhance the technology for public use.
