Tesla and BMW pick up ‘Engine of the Year’ awards

Tesla and BMW have both picked up awards at the International Engine of the Year Awards for their electric and hybrid powertrains.

The Awards, presented by Engine Technology International magazine, were first launched in 1999 and recognise the best developments in engine technology.

Tesla won the ‘Green Engine’ category, becoming the first manufacturer to top the category for three consecutive years. The award took into account the pure electric powertrains of both the Tesla Model S and newly released Model X.

BMW’s 1.5-litre three-cylinder electric-gasoline hybrid, found in the i8, was relegated to second place behind Tesla, but picked up top honours for the ‘1.4 litre to 1.8 litre’ category, beating off competition from Audi’s 1.8-litre TFSI, as well as BMW’s own 1.5 litre turbo.
