£3m awarded for local air quality improvement measures

28 projects to improve air quality across local authorities in England have been awarded a share of £3 million through the Air Quality Grant.

The money supports schemes which help councils develop and implement measures to improve local air quality.

Cambridge City Council will receive funding for road closures to test low cost sensors and compare zero traffic data with road in use.

Islington Council will promote electric charging points for canal boats, encourage uptake of cleaner sources of fuel, and reduce idling.

Oxford City Council will receive funding for a city-wide communications programme to support the achievement of zero-emissions delivery freight.

Environment Minister, Thérèse Coffey said: "While we know air pollution has reduced significantly in recent decades, it is still the top environmental risk to health in the UK. Today’s funding demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting the local momentum needed to continue to improve our air now and for future generations.

"Local authorities are best placed to introduce systems that work best for their areas, which is why we are working closely with them to ensure they have the appropriate funding and support."
