World Biogas Summit and Expo takes place 15-16 June

News

For the first time since the outbreak of Covid, the international anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas industry community will be able to gather in person at the co-located World Biogas Summit and World Biogas Expo in Birmingham on 15th-16th June. They are the only events in the world solely dedicated to the AD and biogas sector.

Organised by the World Biogas Association (WBA), the World Biogas Summit will provide high level insights on the role AD and biogas can play in addressing global challenges such as climate change and the energy and food crises. Entitled “the Methane Imperative”, the event will build upon the launch of the Global Methane Pledge at COP26 to highlight how biogas could deliver up to 50% of the targets set up in the pledge, which has now been signed by over 100 countries.

The impressive line-up of keynote speakers include Rick Duke, Senior Director and White House Liaison for the Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, and co-chair of the Climate & Clean Air Coalition (CCAC). Also speaking is H.E. Hadjia Samira Bawumia, 2nd Lady of Ghana and Ambassador for the UN backed Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, who has won the prestigious Ashden Award in recognition of her efforts towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7.

Frans Timmermans, European Commission Executive Vice President for the European Green Deal, and Dolf Gielen, Director of IRENA Innovation and Technology Centre, will also be speaking.

“Anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas are recognised by leading organisations such as the International Energy Agency (IEA), the Climate & Clean Air Coalition, and the EU as immediate, readily available solutions to the climate change, energy and food security crises,” says, Charlotte Morton, Chief Executive of the World Biogas Association.

“On the issue of climate change, which impacts on everything else, it is critical that we usher in a new era of waste management to reduce methane emissions. AD is the technology that can deliver this. The World Biogas Expo and Summit will enable all those concerned with addressing today’s global challenges to recognise the industry’s potential to provide rapid solutions and help achieve Global Methane Pledge, Paris Agreement and UN Sustainable Development Goals ambitions – no less”.

Meanwhile, over 3,000 delegates are expected to attend the co-located World Biogas Expo, organised by WBA in partnership with the UK Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA), with a full house of exhibitors showcasing the latest innovations, equipment and services offered to those operating or interested in entering the AD and biogas market. The Expo conference theatre will feature sessions on various aspects of the industry – from plant optimisation, transport fuel upgrade, on-farm AD and digestate use to international markets information, Biogas Futures and Carbon Capture for Use and Storage.
