Volkswagen (VW) CEO Matthias Müller has confirmed that the group aims to produce a radical new electric vehicle (EV), capable of travelling of 300 miles on a single 15 minute charge, according to a report from Auto Car.

Müller added: "Nobody can say when it will be a reality, but we are working on it.”

The move was revealed on the eve of the Geneva Motor Show and is part of the group’s wider strategy to rebuild its reputation following the emissions scandal.

Herbert Diess, VW’s brand boss, has reportedly instructed the firm’s engineering bosses to create ‘the Volkswagen for the digital age’.

One engineer with knowledge of VW’s research and development plans has claimed: “It will make a huge statement. It’s planned to use cutting-edge technology but at a price that makes it attainable for the average motorist.”

The group has also said that changes to the awaited EV compared to current car design will include a more spacious interior, and greater agility and connectivity opportunities. VW is also exploring ways to  increase the vehicles electric range, through the use of compact electric motors and high performance batteries.

So far VW has focussed its electric strategy on existing models such as the Up and Golf, however, the new EV is being developed with the aim of exceeding Porsche’s Mission-E saloon range of 311 miles.
